How To Add A Custom Domain To An Existing WordPress.com Blog

Perhaps you already have a blog on WordPress.com?

Something like happydays.wordpress.com or lovelytrees.wordpress.com, or the like? Maybe you want that blog to have a custom URL? Something cleaner and more personalised than the wordpress.com address?  happydays.com or lovelytrees.com? No problem.  Register your domain and then watch the video (above) WordPress made us to see how to do that.

If you want to register your brand new domain name WITH WordPress.com and get them to handle the whole thing, you can do that too.  Find out more about that here.  It’s pretty streamlined, but I like to register via a domain name reseller/registrar for future flexibility.

Even though you LOOK like you’re independent of wordpress.com, there are still some rules that will govern your newly customised WordPress.com blog :

From WordPress: The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

This gets back to the limitations we talked about with WordPress.com.  Dang you WordPress! (Even though you are awesome…!)

If you are thinking about moving from WordPress.com to a custom domain on WordPress.org to escape such limitations, go here.
